Firstly what are Alt tags?

Alt text (alternative text), also known as “alt attributes”, “alt descriptions,” and “alt tags,” are used within an HTML code to describe the appearance and function of an image on a page.

When choosing images always try and use images that are relevant to the text and keyword you are targeting or relevant to your brand.

To me, the most important thing about Alt text is it helps visually impaired people. Those of us who may use screen readers to search on the internet rather than the usual way. The screen reader will read out what the image is tagged as describing it.

Alt text is also used by the search engines so when someone searched for what you have alt text you have used your image will show. So why is this so useful.

  1. Google images make it easy for people to find what they are looking for by displaying the images for what they have typed in (keyword) This way you can glance over the images and choose which one you like.
  2. You get a juicy link back to your website where people can click and visit your website.

So when you are naming images always bear this in mind and use relevant keywords that describe your image.

Another point to remember is that if an image has got an Alt text tag and when the webpage loads it fails to load the image correctly it will at least display the alt text so as not to just leave a black space.

Lastly remember to also make your file name of your image what it is so when you upload it does not read something like 15751sknf_neihdnns.jpg but instead, Kitten Scaring Daisies. laughing smile
